Born in London and educated at Christ Church, Oxford, he started travelling through Europe in 1833, proceeding then on to Egypt and the Holy Land in 1833-4, on a tour of research where he obtained many valuable manuscripts. He has been criticised for removing these manuscripts and bringing them to Britain. He returned to England in 1834. A second tour was undertaken in 1837-8, where he again bought manuscripts from monasteries and more purchases in Egypt. The account of his travels he published as Visit to the Monasteries in the Levant (1849). \r\n\r\nHis collection of manuscripts was put on deposit by his son in the British Museum in 1876 and his daughter bequeathed the collection to the museum upon her death in 1917. A group of 114 objects was purchased by the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) in 1891 from the collection of Lord Zouche for £5000. A note in the Museum Acquisition register notes that these objects, together with several still on loan to the Museum, were exhibited as loans from Lord Zouche from the year 1876 to the date of their purchase', that is in 1891. \r\n\r\nBought (Zouche Collection). This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.\r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Metallurgy, silver gilt","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"The Indian Heritage.
