This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.\r\n\r\n<u>1907 Register entry:</u>\r\n\r\n<b>Handloom</b> [DEACCESSIONED IN 1950]: (<i>Aluva</i>: <i>Al-gé</i>) of coconut-wood, bamboo and cotton-cord, upon which a cotton cloth (<i>etirili</i>) is shown in the process of production. <b>Loom-brush </b>[DEACCESSIONED IN 1950] of bast, bound with bamboo-strip and hempen cords. SINHALESE (KANDY DISTRICT); 19th cent. Loom, L. of beam, 6 ft. 7 in.; W. of sleay (weaving-frame), 4 ft. 8 in.; Brush, L. 2 ft. 6 in. Given by A.K. Coomaraswamy, Esq. D.Sc.\n\n705, 705a-1907.\nSquare frame, formerly erected in an open shed on a platform (<i>al-pila</i>) with pit (<i>al-vala</i>) for the weaver's feat and the pedals (<i>pa-meduma</i>), the sleay or weaving-frame (<i>rodu lélla</i>) consisting of three parts, the upper piece (<i>poruvata</i>) held by the weaver, the lower-piece (<i>yattinan gal lélla</i>) below the web, and the teeth (<i>alu-karala</i>), thin slip of cane, through which the warp threads pass. The warp threads (<i>núl-heda</i>) are separated by heddles (<i>alu-vela</i>) attached to narrow strips of wood (<i>alu-kampaha</i>), suspended, when in use, to a beam above. The narrow-lath or weaver's sward (<i>sema lélla</i>) used for picking up the warp threads; and the wide-lath used, sideways, to form a \"shed\" for the passae of the shuttle. The border of the unbleached <i>etirili</i> in process contains Y-shaped devices in red and blue cotton threads. \n\n<b>Cotton Series.</b> SINHALESE (KANDY DISTRICT); 19th cent. Given by A.K.
