When he was defeated and killed at his capital, Seringapatam, in 1799 the hanging was taken from one of Tipu’s tents by the head of the British forces, Colonel Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), the future Duke of Wellington. He later gave it to Angela Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906) who was the granddaughter of banker Thomas Coutts and one of the wealthiest women in Britain.  Burdett-Coutts was a notable benefactor of the Church of England, building two churches including St Stephen's Church, Rochester Row, Westminster.  She gave the velvet hanging to St Stephen’s who lent it to the V&A in 1925.  From 1953 it was displayed in Apsley House, the home of the Duke of Wellington.
