The painting was donated by Benjamin Rowland, a historian of Asian art and Harvard professor, to the museum in 1970. Rowland acquired the scroll from Howard C. Hollis, a dealer, former Curator of Oriental Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the mentor of Shermen Lee. The Japanese style of mounting reveals that Hollis sourced it from an old Japanese collection. The scroll was formerly attributed to Wang Yuan (c. 1280 - after 1349) by its Japanese owner, probably because of its academic style, which was admired by painters of the Kano School and was often ascribed to this Yuan artist. Judging from the painter's strong interest in the surface patterns on the bird feathers and the clear and heavy outlines on the leaves, the painting represents a style strikingly reminicent of the early Ming academic manner as seen in works by artists such as Bian Jingzhao (c. 1354 - 1428).\n\n ","physicalDescription":"Album leaf mounted as hanging scroll.
