This schematic map was probably made for an important pilgrim and shows the key religious features of the holy city. The top of the map points towards a westerly direction, and the river Ganga flows at the bottom with its tributaries Assi and Varana at the left and right. The 17th-century Aurangzeb Mosque is visible on the lower right. The red perimeter line is \r\nthe Panchakroshi pilgrimage route around the sacred area. In the red central area is the Vishveshvara temple with its Shivalinga, the main symbol of Shiva.
