The volume was given highly ornate borders in the 18th century, perhaps in Delhi or Lucknow, to provide unity. The unidentified Mughal noble has yet to be identified. The portrait was probably done in about 1650-1700. The repeating floral motifs of the borders may have been intended as patterns for embroiderers and enamellers. Regional courts became increasingly important, and their rulers often emulated the emperors\r\nin collecting paintings and calligraphies from earlier periods.
