By the 1830s, artists had arrived in Calcutta from rural villages in Bengal and began to produce paintings that reflected the local history, mythology, customs and conflicts of a colonised society. As a popular art form, these artists are recognised for their use of brilliant colour, simplified images and swift brushstrokes that became the hallmark of Kalighat painting in the 19th and early 20th century.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Painting, Shiva with the dead Sati, watercolour and tin alloy on paper, Kalighat, Kolkata, ca. 1890","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Archer, W G: 'Kalighat Paintings', V&A, 1971, p73, 26iv"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"Shiva with the dead Sati.","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Shiva","id":"N1687"},{"text":"Sati","id":"N8649"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"deities","id":"x31373"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["IS.265-1955"],"accessionNumberNum":"265","accessionNumberPrefix":"IS","accessionYear":1955,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-23","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":true}}
