It has been expertly fashioned from a single piece of nephrite jade, which is a hard and durable material that requires patience and skill to work. Although it is a hard material, when it has been worked to give fine edges or thicknesses, it can be prone to damage by sharp impacts or significant and rapid changes in temperature. ","physicalDescription":"A delicately and expertly carved bowl in translucent white nephrite jade with a satin-like polish. The bowl has been fashioned in an asymmetric four-lobed form resembling half of an opening flower bud. It has a narrow end that has been carved in low relief with a calyx that continues on both the upper and lower surfaces, partially covering the top of the bowl's tip and there is a small asymmetric finial attached to the stem's stump. From this narrow end, the lobes widen to meet a scalloped rim at the broader opposing end. On the inside of the bowl, the lobes are gently concave with each meeting its neighbour at a slight ridge and on the underside, the gently convex lobes meet at a shallow groove. The bowl stands on a small elongated foot carved in outline and in surface detail as a dissected leaf with stem.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"nephrite","id":"AAT11120"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"White nephrite jade, carved and polished using abrasives and abrasive-charged tools.","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Gemstones","id":"THES270329"},{"text":"Hardstone","id":"THES270137"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2015HT3164","2015HT3166"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bowls (vessels)","id":"AAT203596"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"17th century","earliest":"1600-01-01","latest":"1699-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schwaiger Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"118.1","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-01","latest":"2016-03-01"},"part":"","note":"Overall length"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"69.9","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-01","latest":"2016-03-01"},"part":"","note":"Maximum width"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"22.0 to 24.4","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-01","latest":"2016-03-01"},"part":"","note":"Height range from the rim"},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"21.8","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-01","latest":"2016-03-01"},"part":"","note":"Internal depth from the rim"},{"dimension":"Length","value":"43.2","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-01","latest":"2016-03-01"},"part":"","note":"Length of the leaf foot, excluding its stem"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"24.85","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-01","latest":"2016-03-01"},"part":"","note":"Maximum width of the leaf foot"},{"dimension":"Thickness","value":"0.2 to 0.4","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"01/03/2016","earliest":"2016-03-01","latest":"2016-03-01"},"part":"","note":"Thickness of the wall, at the rim"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This bowl was bequeathed by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schwaiger.\r\n\r\nAdele Helena Schwaiger (nee Dixon), was an actress and singer. She studied at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and later trained at RADA.\r\nIn August 1928, she married Ernest Schwaiger, a jeweller working at Cartier and who was the son of Imre Schwaiger, a leading dealer and authority on gems and eastern works of art. Her last appearance was in the West End musical, Belinda Fair, after which she retired.\r\nAdele and Ernest amassed a significant collection of eastern works of art including Mughal Empire and Chinese jades and other hardstones as well as Japanese netsukes. They remained a devoted couple until Ernest's death in 1976 and, following Adele's death in 1992, their collection was bequeathed to The Victoria & Albert Museum.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bowl, translucent white jade, four-lobed resembling half of a flower bud, foot carved as a leaf, Mughal, 17th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["IS.19-1997"],"accessionNumberNum":"19","accessionNumberPrefix":"IS","accessionYear":1997,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-26","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":false}}
