Developed in Europe around 1705, it became widely available and affordable in Japan from 1829 via Chinese traders. This prompted a fashion for 'blue-printed pictures' (aizuri-e). Prussian blue's high tinting strength and fine particle size worked well alongside existing organic blue colourants, including indigo and dayflower.
