This goblet is decorated with the arms of William V, Prince of Orange, and those of his wife, Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina of Prussia. It must have been commissioned by a royalist. During the last quarter of the century, both royalists and patriots were keen to express their support by toasting to the success of their champions. Diamond-point engravers favoured imported English lead-glass, because it was soft and easy to engrave. Its lustrous surface also provided a good background for the matte engraving. These qualities enabled engravers to develop an entirely new style. Instead of scratching lines into the glass surface with a diamond-point, they could now build up a picture by thousands of minute, dot-shaped scratches. By varying the density of the dots, these skilled engravers would create an illusion of depth with highlights and shaded parts.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wolff, David","id":"A1034"},"association":{"text":"engraver (inciser)","id":"AAT239410"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stipple-engraved glass","categories":[{"text":"ELISE","id":"THES48961"},{"text":"Glass","id":"THES48946"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[{"text":"EUROPE","id":"AAT20656"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AV9278"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"131","id":"THES49882"},"free":"","case":"16","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Beaker","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"The Hague","id":"x29217"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1780-1790","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1790-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Wine glass, clear colourless glass, diamond-point engraved, Northern Netherlands (probably The Hague), engraved by David Wolff, 1780-90","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Smit 1993, Eb.7"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"The portraits are of William V, Prince of Orange, and his wife Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina of Prussia.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["C.319-1931"],"accessionNumberNum":"319","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1931,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Glass gallery number","id":"THES50491"},"number":"8781"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-19","recordCreationDate":"1997-12-13","availableToBook":false}}
