This event is commemorated in the background. The foreground is dominated by the standing figures of three Kabuki actors who had starred in a performance together earlier in the same year. The juxtaposition of what we now see as ‘traditional’ Japan with western steam power is intriguing. Designed by Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900).
