When authorities banned depictions of kabuki actors in 1841, some printmakers showed actors in ‘disguise’ as wrestlers. While rules later relaxed, such playful pairings persisted. Theatre fans would be quick to recognise this figure as actor Arashi Rikan III (1812–63) disguised as the wrestler Narukami.\n\r\nUtagawa Kunisada (1786–1865)\r\nEdo (Tokyo)\r\nWoodblock print\r\nMuseum no.
