It would have been used inside a shield to protect the user's knuckles. Most examples are plain, and often of leather, but some other decorative ones are known. Most of the embroidered ones seem to come from Jaipur in Rajasthan.","physicalDescription":"A cover for the knuckle pad of a shield embroidered with a prince and lady in a palace garden. This embroidered design in fine chain-stitch is closely related to miniature painting probably made by Rajput ladies for their husbands. It is made to protect a warrior's hand inside the shield.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidered","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton embroidered with silk, chain stitch","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Arms & Armour","id":"THES48992"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2018KT1579","2006AN8351","2011EY9785","2017KC3236"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304343"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shield accessory","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jaipur","id":"x30863"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1704-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr Imre Schwaiger","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"15.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Taken from indian heritage catalogue","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Mr. Imre Schwaiger.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Shield accessory (knuckle pad), Jaipur (Rajasthan), ca. 1700","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Guy, John and Swallow, Deborah (eds.) <u>Arts of India: 1550-1900</u>.
