The bust is now ascribed to Andrea dell'Aquilla, who carved the marble relief depicting a Sybil, also in the Staatliche Museum, Berlin.\n\r\nPlaster casts were especially sought after during the 19th century, when reproductions of great works of sculpture and architecture were thought crucial for the training of artists. A separating substance was applied to the surface of the work to be reproduced, and a plaster mould made from that. The mould would then be used to make any number of additional plaster copies. These were often sold to artists, and later in the century to art colleges for study purposes.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"dell'Aquila, Andrea","id":"A17996"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":"original"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plaster","id":"AAT14922"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Plaster Cast","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2007BM5890","2011FC7119","2011FC7120","2019LM7473"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"46B","id":"THES49798"},"free":"","case":"FS","shelf":"N","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bust","id":"AAT47457"}],[{"text":"Plaster Cast","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"sculpted","id":"x30774"},"note":"original"},{"place":{"text":"Berlin (city)","id":"x28746"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":"plaster cast"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1450-1500","earliest":"1450-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"sculpted","id":"x30774"},"note":"original"},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1889","earliest":"1884-01-01","latest":"1893-12-31"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":"plaster cast"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"48.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"43.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Germany in 1889 for 15 marks.","historicalContext":"Formerly thought to represent a Princess of Urbino, and ascribed to Desiderio da Settignano, (b. about 1429; d. 1464), the bust is now ascribed to Andrea dell'Aquilla, who carved the marble relief depicting a Sybil, also in the Staatliche Museum, Berlin.","briefDescription":"Plaster cast, of a portrait bust of a young woman, after the limestone original in the Bode-Museum (Berlin), by Andrea dell’Aquila, Italy, 1450-1500, cast Berlin (Germany), about 1889.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"busts","id":"AAT47457"},{"text":"portraits","id":"AAT15637"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Renaissance busts were seen as the beginning of naturalistic portraiture and were greatly admired in the late 19th century.
