Previously limited to the Dutch in Nagasaki, the conspicuous presence of Europeans and Americans in Japan was picked up in commercially published prints. This woodblock print juxtaposes a woman in European-style dress (possibly Dutch) with two imported creatures, a leopard and a cockatoo. The display of exotic animals was a popular spectacle around this time, but imported prints and picture books were also used as source material by artists.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Utagawa Yoshimori","id":"AUTH396738"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woodblock print","id":"x38448"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour woodblock print on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2013GC5922"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES393988"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Woodblock print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1860-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"7th month, 1st year of Man'en era"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"鳥獣図会","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Pictures of Birds and Animals","transliteration":"Chōjū zue","type":"","note":"Series title"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Woodblock print of woman in European-style dress with cockatoo and leopard from the series 'Pictures of Birds and Animals' by Utagawa Yoshimori (1830-1884), Edo (Tokyo), Japan, 1860.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.5-1965"],"accessionNumberNum":"5","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1965,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":true}}
