His original design for the apex of the pediment was too ornate for the cathedral authorities and he left the work unfinished. In 1493 Giacomo da Campione and Giovannino de'Grass, (d. 1498) agreed that they would complete the design with a single crucifix. In 1495/6 the finished work was painted and gilded by Porrino de'Grassi. The plaster cast was probably acquired partly to show the persistence of the gothic style within Italy in the late 15th century.","physicalDescription":"Plaster cast of the pediment of a doorway, after the marble original by Hans von Fernach along the South door of the South Sacristy of Milan Cathedral.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Fernach, Hans von","id":"A3960"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":"after"},{"name":{"text":"Pierotti, Edoardo","id":"A18009"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plaster","id":"AAT14922"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Plaster cast","categories":[{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Architectural fittings","id":"THES48994"},{"text":"Plaster Cast","id":"THES270451"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2007BM5937","2014HH3227","2014HH3228","2014HH3229","2014HH3232","2014HH3239","2014HH3240","2014HH3241","2014HH3243","2014HH3246","2014HH3247","2019LL8867"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"46B (VA)","id":"THES49798"},"free":"","case":"WN","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pediment","id":"AAT2726"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Milan (city)","id":"x29007"},"association":{"text":"sculpted","id":"x30774"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Milan (city)","id":"x29007"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1493-1496","earliest":"1488-01-01","latest":"1497-12-31"},"association":{"text":"sculpted","id":"x30774"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1897","earliest":"1892-01-01","latest":"1901-12-31"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"573.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"259.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Edoardo Pierotti in 1897 for £52 16s 7d","historicalContext":"Hans von Fernach was one of a group of German sculptors working in Milan Cathedral during the 14th and 15th centuries.
