Colleoni was a condottiere or mercenary leader.  Although he spend the greater part of his career in the service of Venice, and is commemorated there by an equestrian statue by Andrea del Verrocchio (b.1435; d.1488), Colleoni chose to be buried in his birthplace, Bergamo.
