The atmospherically foreboding ballet showed a young girl lost in a nightmare world of pre-Lenten carnival. The roles were created by Joan Harris, Pauline Chrimes and Pauline Wadsworth\r\nMardi Gras was choreographed to an original score by Leonard Salzedo with the production’s sets and costumes designed by Hugh Stevenson for Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet and first performed on 26 November 1946. The ballet was short-lived only receiving 25 performances but for critic, P W Manchester, it was the ‘first valuable contribution to English Ballet’ from the newly formed company. \r\nHugh Stevenson was one of the leading designers for dance during the first quarter of a century of the development of C20th British Ballet. Although not revolutionary in style or concept, Stevenson's work, in its sympathy with both the subject and mood of the works he designed and needs of the dancer, exemplifies the best in dance design at that time. Stevenson also created the scenario for Mardi Gras.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Design for a girl in the pas de trois in Andree Howard's ballet Mardi Gras, depicting a full length faceless girl, facing front, with her right arm behind the head, with a black half mask from which spring black spikes and white feathers, wearing a blue classical tutu decorated with black curlicues and white spots. The legs and feet are placed in arabesque a la seconde and are washed in flesh tones.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stevenson, Hugh","id":"A3938"},"association":{"text":"Costume designer","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"Watercolour","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"Gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"Drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, watercolour and gouache on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2013GV4477"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356599"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"costume design","id":"AAT163423"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1946","earliest":"1946-01-01","latest":"1946-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Cyril W.
