The prince was initially considered to be Prince Akbar and the painting to date from ca.1685. If the figure was originally intended to represent Dara Shikuh, he may have been painted to resemble Prince Akbar. Dara Shikuh would have been more closely associated with gatherings of Hindu mystics so conversely if the figure was intended as Prince Akbar it could later have been labelled as Dara Shikuh, perhaps when the painting was put in the album.
