The saints engraved on the arms of this cross are mainly Franciscans, like Anthony of Padua and Louis of Toulouse. This suggests that the cross comes from a Franciscan church. Although the Franciscans advocated poverty, Francis himself allowed showy altar furnishings.","physicalDescription":"Cross, decorated with medallions of painted enamel on silver and enamelled knobs. Cross engraved with figures, originally enamelled, representing, on one side: Our Lord in the Tomb, the Virgin Mary, St Clara, and St Anthony of Padua.  On the other side: St John the Baptist, St Francis, St Louis of Toulouse(?) and St Bernardino of Siena. The medallions represent, on a ground of translucent blue : four saints surrounding Christ blessing, and on the other side the Agnus Dei surrounded by the emblems of the four Evangelists.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"amalgam gilding","id":"AAT53790"},{"text":"enamelling (painting)","id":"x36974"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver and copper gilt, with painted enamel medallions","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CA2866","2009CA2865"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"50C (VA)","id":"THES49097"},"free":"","case":"CA1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cross","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1400-1500","earliest":"1400-01-01","latest":"1500-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"40.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"20.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"0.46","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured for the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver, copper, parcel gilt and enamel, Italy, 15th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"ALTAR CROSS\r\nFigures of Our Lord in the Tomb, the Virgin and St. Clare and St. Anthony of Padua, and on the back, St. John the Baptist, St. Francis, St. Louis of Toulouse (?) and St. Bernardino of Siena\r\nSalting Bequest","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["M.582-1910"],"accessionNumberNum":"582","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1910,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LU8191","2019LU7165","2019LU0775","2021MW6174"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-14","recordCreationDate":"2000-06-01","availableToBook":false}}
