The album of designs was produced by Haibara, a specialist paper company founded in Nihonbashi in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1806. The company's high-quality washi (Japanese paper), including colourfully printed chiyogami and paper for letters, uchiwa (fans) and fusuma (sliding doors) were displayed at international expositions and sold in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th century. Haibara still exists today and their archivists matched historic designs held by the company with those in the V&A’s album allowing the museum to identify it.
