It depicts the biblical story of Samson slaying a Philistine with the jawbone of an ass. The Fountain of Samson was commissioned by Francesco de' Medici for the Casino Mediceo. Executed in 1561- 2, the figures were not incorporated into a fountain until 1569-70. After being shipped to Spain in 1601, the figures were given to Charles I of England by Philip IV of Spain and are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.","physicalDescription":"On both sides of the sheet are record drawings of Giambologna's terracotta model for the Fountain of Neptune, pen and ink on paper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Francavilla, Pietro","id":"A2488"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pen and ink","id":"x30618"},{"text":"black chalk","id":"AAT80058"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"pen and ink and chalk on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014HC9517","2014HC9516","2006AT8202","2006AT8203"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WS","id":"THES49603"},"free":"","case":"R","shelf":"98","box":"R"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1580-1602","earliest":"1580-01-01","latest":"1602-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.695-1993","id":"O38970"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"A.7-1954","id":"O14761"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the Murray Bequest and The Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"9.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"di Francavilla map-a B","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"Italian","medium":"","method":"","position":"front","script":"","translation":"By Francavilla [manu propria] in his own hand","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Italian; front; Unknown"}],"objectHistory":"Francavilla was Giambologna's assistant from 1580 until 1602.
