One of the major innovations in children's clothing in the early decades of the 20th century was the use of fabrics like this rayon which were lightweight but strong and easily washable. Advances in textile production had also provided dyes which were more likely to be 'colour fast' so that their colours would not fade, nor present a streaked appearance when washed.","physicalDescription":"Little girl's dress of unlined pale grey rayon, with a round neck and puffed sleeves. The bodice has a shaped insertion of bobbin lace at the top of the neck, and is embroidered at the front with pale pink spots and garlands of raised embroidered roses worked in shades of red, yellow and purple. The sleeves are gathered into bands of self fabric; the skirt is embroidered to match the bodice, and its fullness is contained by two panels of honeycomb smocking at the front and two at the back. The garment fastens at the back of the neck with two press-studs.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Rayon","id":"AAT14059"},{"text":"lace","id":"AAT132861"},{"text":"thread","id":"AAT14250"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"},{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"},{"text":"smocking","id":"x40311"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Rayon trimmed with lace, smocking and embroidered flowers","categories":[{"text":"Children's clothes","id":"THES48979"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2025PF0313","2008BT5259","2008BT5261","2008BT5260","2008BT5208"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES323931"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Little girl's dress","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1938","earliest":"1933-01-01","latest":"1942-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Monica Diaz","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"53","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"centre back","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Worn by the donor, Monica Diaz (born 1935).
