Their colour or pattern often determined their use.  Patterned stones, such as fossilised corals or strongly-veined stones, like this, were considered, in the south German region, a powerful protection against witches and the evil eye.","physicalDescription":"Heart-shaped amulet made from a piece of pink veined stone, possibly serpentine, set in a silver mount.  The mount has a closed back, and serrated teeth holding the stone at the front.  There is a loop for suspension at the top of the mount, with a loose silver ring threaded through it. There is a small hole drilled through the heart, just below the suspension ring.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"serpentinite","id":"AAT210275"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Decorative pink-veined stone set in a silver mount","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Amulets","id":"THES48995"},{"text":"Traditional jewellery (Europe)","id":"THES270343"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2017KN1241","2017KN1242","2011FD9490"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"018","id":"THES407952"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Amulet","id":"AAT230823"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Vienna","id":"x32837"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1700-1799","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1799-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Hildburgh gift","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Heart-shaped pink stone amulet (Schreckstein) in a silver mount, Vienna (Austria), 1700-1799.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"heart","id":"AAT9874"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.27-1917"],"accessionNumberNum":"27","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1917,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-20","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
