The Museum had bought the Castellani Collection of Italian Peasant Jewellery at the same exhibition, and chose this Danish brooch, among others, to show the differences and similarities between traditional jewellery from different countries. The main purpose of all these acquisitions was to help improve the quality of design among British artisans.\r\n\r\nIn the 1860s, silversmiths throughout Scandinavia had started to experiment with using traditional techniques and patterns, particularly in filigree, to make fashionable jewellery, and this brooch is an example of that trend. It resembles a Norwegian <i>rosesølje</i>, but is not a traditional Danish design. It is probably based on the style developed in Norway by Jacob Tostrup, among others, who also exhibited in Paris in 1867.\r\n\r\nIt cost 17 shillings and six pence in Paris in 1867.","physicalDescription":"Silver filigree brooch with silver-gilt dish-shaped pendants. The centre of the brooch consists of a disc of sheet silver, overlaid with a rosette of open filigree. This is framed by a ring of six kidney shapes, interspersed with circles, of heavy twisted wire. There are ten loops inserted between the centre and the outer ring, six on the outer ring, and one in the centre, each of which originally had a small pendent dish, but many of these are now missing.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Christesen","id":"A35986"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"silver-gilt","id":"x37998"}],"techniques":[{"text":"filigree","id":"x35885"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sheet silver with silver filigree overlay","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Traditional jewellery (Europe)","id":"THES270343"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2018KV9884","2018KV9885"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES407939"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Brooch","id":"AAT45995"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Copenhagen","id":"x32462"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1860-1867","earliest":"1860-01-01","latest":"1867-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"6.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"6.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver filigree brooch with pendent discs, Denmark, 1860-1867.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Illustrated in:\r\n'Italian Jewellery as worn by The Peasants of Italy.
