The majority were either square or rectangular in form, and usually contained one hinged panel to form a door for ease of access. Lanterns could be raised and lowered by a system of cords and pulleys.","physicalDescription":"Lantern, wrought iron, with rectangular panes of glass arched at the top. Six-sided, the openwork top formed of stylized petalled leaves in repoussé, above which a stylized ducal coronet and ball finial. The base with six small trapezoidal panes. Originally suspended and intended to hold a candle, the smoke contained by means of a smoke shade.
