The body of the gourd is fully covered with opaque barniz de Pasto decoration on a black (possibly darkened blue) ground except for two bands around the bottom of the neck and just above the rounded bottom point, which are deep purple-red between two off-white bands, containing an undulating stem with off-white scrolls. The main area of decoration consists of scrolling stems bearing acanthus-like and at least five stylised leaf types, four birds (three with long tails) in different colours, one off-white spotted unicorn and one pinkish-beige seated dog.\n\r\nA large fragment of Barniz de Pasto decoration is missing just above the foot, exposing the orangey gourd substrate. The silver neck mount obscures some of the barniz motifs, suggesting that the gourd was fully decorated with barniz before the mount was fitted.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gourd","id":"AAT11870"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"barniz de Pasto","id":"THES281073"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gourd with <i>barniz de Pasto</i> decoration, and silver","categories":[{"text":"Latin America","id":"THES408126"},{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2024NX2831","2024NX2830","2024NX2827","2024NX2826","2024NX2817","2024NX2811","2024NX2809","2024NX2832","2023NJ7863","2021NB1173","2023NJ1560","2023NJ1561","2021NB1171","2021NB1172","2021NB1174","2021NB1175","2021NB1176","2021NB1177","2021NB1178","2023NK5469","2023NK5470","2023NK5473","2023NK5475","2023NK5478","2023NK5481"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CNFR","id":"THES49206"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"flask","id":"AAT45671"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Peru","id":"x30056"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1650","earliest":"1645-01-01","latest":"1654-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"NH 3/2023"},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dims. from accession register: 3 3/4 x 1 7/8 ins.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought at Leon for £1. 0. 0.
