The body of the gourd is fully covered with opaque barniz de Pasto decoration on a black (possibly darkened blue) ground except for two bands around the neck and just above the bottom point, which are deep purple-red between two off-white bands, containing an undulating stem with off-white berries. The main area of decoration consists of scrolling stems bearing acanthus-like and other stylised leaves, with bunches of berries or grapes, five birds in different colours, one off-white hunting dog and one blueish large feline with spots, perhaps representing a jaguar, jaguarundi or coati, an indigenous member of the racoon family.\r\n\nFor the identification of animal motifs see Monica Katz, ‘Local Color: The Visual Analysis of a South American Colonial Lacquered Gourd in the Collection of the Hispanic Society Museum and Library’ (AIC Wooden Artifacts Group Postprints, Uncasville, CT &amp; New England, 2019).\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gourd","id":"AAT11870"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"barniz de Pasto","id":"THES281073"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gourd with<i> barniz de Pasto</i> decoration, and silver","categories":[{"text":"Latin America","id":"THES408126"},{"text":"Lacquerware","id":"THES49004"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2024NX2829","2024NX2825","2024NX2824","2024NX2823","2024NX2816","2024NX2815","2024NX2814","2024NX2810","2023NJ7864","2021NB1179","2023NJ1555","2023NJ1556","2023NJ1559","2021NB1180","2021NB1181","2021NB1182","2021NB1183","2021NB1184","2021NB1185","2006AU2511","2023NK5471","2023NK5474","2023NK5477","2023NK5479","2023NK5482"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA027","id":"THES413401"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"flask","id":"AAT45671"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Peru","id":"THES294022"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1650","earliest":"1645-01-01","latest":"1654-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"10.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"including stopper","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"4.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Excl. stopper","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dims. from accession register: 3 3/4 x 1 7/8 ins.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This perfume flask was purchased for £3 from J.
