Sometimes referred to as a 'timbale', or 'cup', these beakers were distinguished from other forms of drinking vessel by their low, cast foot. The 1744 probate inventory of the royal stonemason Pierre Lepautre included three 'timballe' goblets and one goblet with a foot'. Many examples still survive today.","physicalDescription":"Bell-shaped beaker with a moulded rim and a small circular cast foot decorated with a band of beading. The body is divided in two parts by an engraved band; the lower section is decorated with lambrequins (fringe-like ornament) and engraved panels which enclose flowers, scrolls and shells. The upper section is decorated with an engraved border of alternating scrolled swags with flowers or shells, and smaller oval panels with flowers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"silver, raised, engraved and cast.","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2019MJ9906"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES335806"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Beaker","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1751","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1751-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"9.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/12/2020","earliest":"2020-12-02","latest":"2020-12-02"},"part":"Foot to rim.","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"7.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Across the rim of the beaker","date":{"text":"02/12/2020","earliest":"2020-12-02","latest":"2020-12-02"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/12/2020","earliest":"2020-12-02","latest":"2020-12-02"},"part":"Across underside of foot","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"119","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"02/12/2020","earliest":"2020-12-02","latest":"2020-12-02"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Marked on the base of the bowl:\nMaker's mark - illegible\nWarden's mark - A crowned 'K' for 15 July 1750 to 15 July 1751 (Nocq, iv, p. 216).","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Marks on side and rim of cup:\r\nA hen's head in a shaped cartouche, the discharge mark for 'menus ouvrages' (smallwork), current from 10 October 1750 until 14 October 1756.\r\n(See Carré, p. 36.)\nA crab, the silver restricted warranty mark for the provinces in use from 10 May 1838 (see Carré, p. 209).","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Marks on rim of foot:\r\nA crab, the silver restricted warranty mark for the provinces in use from 10 May 1838 (see Carré, p. 209).","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"The Museum purchased this beaker in 1892 from M.
