The design was registered on 17 December 1849. It is a simplified small-scale adaptation of the Cavan brooch, a Celtic brooch made in the late 8th Century and now in the National Museum of Ireland. The brooch was also known as the Queen's brooch because a replica of it was presented to Queen Victoria during her visit to the Dublin Exhibition in 1853.\r\n\r\nThis example is one of six Irish reproduction brooches purchased for the collections of the Museum of Manufactures (forerunner of the South Kensington Museum and the V&A) at Marlborough House, London, from the Great Exhibition held in London in 1851. It cost £1 1s 6d. For a more elaborate version by West and Son of the same brooch, see 2750-1853.","physicalDescription":"Brooch, penannular in form (ie. circular with a small part of its circumference missing); decorated with three trefoil-shaped bosses and applied with filigree.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"James West and Son","id":"AUTH335760"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Metal, gilded","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2015HU4455","2015HU4456","2015HU4457","2015HU4462"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"018","id":"THES407501"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Brooch","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Ireland","id":"x32424"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"62","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"26/05/2015","earliest":"2015-05-26","latest":"2015-05-26"},"part":"From brooch rim to head of pin","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"51","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"26/05/2015","earliest":"2015-05-26","latest":"2015-05-26"},"part":"Maximum, across front of brooch","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"13","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"26/05/2015","earliest":"2015-05-26","latest":"2015-05-26"},"part":"Maximum, from back to front of pin","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Design Registry mark for 17 December 1849.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"'WEST & SON'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Stamped on back of brooch"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver-gilt penannular brooch.
