The white rose was often a symbol of mourning. Set against a black background, it made a suitable jewel for women to wear as part of mourning dress. \r\n\r\nFlorence was a major centre for the production of <i>pietra dura</i> work (mosaic in hardstones). Jewels such as this made popular souvenirs for tourists visiting the city.
