Edward Cropley established Cropley and Co. in Calcutta in 1819, advertising in the Calcutta Government Gazette: 'Edward Cropley was for 15 years principal manufacturer to the first houses in London ... employed on the orders of the Royal Family and Nobility of Great Britain.' He presumably had acted as a supplier to Royal Goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge and Rundell.\n\nThis piece is marked on the base with the letter B. 'A' and 'B' marks were frequently used in Calcutta, but not consistently enough to denote levels of quality. Cropley mainly used the 'B' mark. This caster is also punched with a simulated sterling mark, the lion passant, a practice illegal in England.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sugar caster, (one of a pair), silver, India, Calcutta, ca.1819-1824, mark of E.
