The name ‘Sánchez’ is engraved on the stopper.\r\nThe body of the gourd is fully covered with opaque barniz de Pasto decoration on a black (possibly darkened blue) ground except for two bands around the bottom of the neck and just above the rounded bottom point, which are deep purple-red between two off-white bands, containing an undulating stem with off-white scrolls. The main area of decoration consists of scrolling stems bearing acanthus-like and several stylised leaf types, three birds in different colours, one off-white spotted creature with bushy tail and pointed ears, perhaps a racoon or fox. Predominant in the design is a heart motif, with double off-white outline, held between two elongated hands (or gloves) with pointed fingers, indicating a betrothal gift. Rollin and Feuardent).\r\n'Spanish-American; 18th century; sprinkler damaged and piece wanting'\n\n'Scent-flask made of the round end of a gourd, decorated all over in coloured designs on a black ground, with silver neck-mount and sprinkler engraved with the name SANCHEZ. The bulbous body is decorated with a fox(?), birds, and two hands holding a heart, amidst flowering stems, the neck is encircled by a band bearing a scroll and a similar band encloses a medallion of foliage on the bottom.
