It has a bisque head and composition body which contains a voice mechanism. The mechanism works when the string protruding from the dolls' left side is pulled. \r\n\r\nThe doll was given to its owner when she was six, but it was not to play with, only to look at. She has been repaired at various points in her life and now wears a replacement wig. It is understood that she was last restored in Johannesburg in 1996, just before she came to the Museum.","physicalDescription":"The doll represents a caucasian girl with blue-grey eyes and a long brown wig. The bisque head has an open cupid's bow mouth (with visble upper teeth), pierced ears and painted brows and lashes. The torso and partly jointed limbs are of composition with separate fingers, thumbs and big toes. Two strings, each with a bead at the end, protrude from the doll's true left side and activate her voice mechanism (bellows).","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Steiner, Jules Nicholas","id":"A12123"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bisque","id":"x33597"},{"text":"composition","id":"AAT237906"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulding","id":"AAT53134"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bisque and composition","categories":[{"text":"Dolls & Toys","id":"THES48967"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2014HA2818","2014HA2815","2014HA2819","2014HA2816","2014HA2820","2014HA2821"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SR011","id":"THES341117"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"doll","id":"AAT211087"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1890-1899","earliest":"1890-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Ruby Lansom","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"71","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"doll","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Height: 28in (71cm)","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"A.19 on upper back of the head","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Mould number"},{"content":"LE PETIT PARISIEN/BÉBÉ J STEINER/MARQUE/DÉPOSÉE/MÉDAILLE D'OR/PARIS/1889","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"The little Parisian (boy) (sic)/ J Steiner child doll/ registered mark/ gold medal Paris 1889","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"paper label attached to left hip"}],"objectHistory":"The doll belonged to the donor's mother Hilda and it was ordered from Paris in 1899 by Hilda's father, Mr Buccianti, for her birth.
