This example is a 'Neapolitan' mandolin, a version developed in the 1760s. It is tuned like a violin, and played with a pick. The 'Neapolitan' mandolin enjoyed popularity at the ends of both the 18th and 19th centuries and featured in the works of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) and Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901).","physicalDescription":"'Body of twenty-one fluted ribs of maple with ivory intervening stringing and a fancy fretted lace. The belly is bent inwards at bridge-level and has a circular soundhole surrounded with a band of tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl marquetry with figures. There is similar marquetry, but of a formal nature, on the fingerboard and the lower end of the belly. On the latter also a tortoiseshell protector plate between soundhole and bridge. The neck is banded with mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell backed with metal foil. There are ten silver frets. The shaped flat head has eight rear pegs, for four double courses of wire strings (two steel, one brass, one overspun).' \n\nAnthony Baines, <i>Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-Keyboard Instruments</i> (London, 1978), p. 39.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Vinaccia, Antonio","id":"A29185"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28690"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"maple","id":"AAT12236"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"pine","id":"AAT12620"},{"text":"mother-of-pearl","id":"AAT11835"},{"text":"tortoise shell","id":"AAT11837"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"planing","id":"AAT53863"},{"text":"stringing","id":"x37524"},{"text":"inlay","id":"AAT53853"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Planed and joined maple ribs with ivory stringing; planed pine, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell; mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell inlaid fingerboard with silver frets.","categories":[{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006BF2106"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES341733"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Neapolitan mandolin","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Naples","id":"x32548"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1772","earliest":"1772-01-01","latest":"1772-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"57","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Total","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"28","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of body","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of neck","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"32.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"length of string","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"17.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Anthony Baines: <i>Catalogue of Musical Instruments in the Victoria and Albert Museum - Part II: Non-keyboard instruments.
