Although the makers of many of these chairs are unknown the collection illustrates just how inventive furniture makers were in personalising their variants of well-known forms, such as oval backs or shield backs. Although we do not know which firm made this chair, the presence of the initials 'I.D' stamped under the back seat rail show us that the actual workman who made it had those initials and used his stamp to identify pieces which he had made and for which he deserved payment. ","physicalDescription":"A mahogany chair with oval back and upholstered seat, the pierced splat of five fillets centreing on an oval, wheel-like motif. The front legs are turned and fluted, abover bulbous feet. The back legs are undecorated, raked, and continue into tall supports for the oval back. The supports are moulded on the edges, the oval back carved with a gadrooned edge. The five-splatted back is fluted to either side of the pierced central motif. The seat shows modern upholsery with a double row of brass-headed nails.
