He made his first piece of furniture, a bookcase, in the garden shed at home. Bacon's ingenious jigsaw design enables the chairs to be connected together and stacked for easy storage. The chair was produced as a result of a design project initiated by Professor R. D. Russell at the Royal College of Art. \n\nDesign Furniture Contracts Ltd was formed in September 1961 as an associated company of Design Furniture Ltd, to deal with the increasing volume of special contract work and expand this particular side of the business. It was felt that the linking/stacking chair was particularly suitable as the first standard design in its range of modern contract furniture and the chair was produced for the halls of several colleges, among them the Loughborough College of Technology.\n\nThe new Bury Unitarian Church was designed and constructed by local architect James T Ratcliffe and opened in 1973. Ratcliffe chose Bacon's chairs to seat a congregation of 140 people.\n\r\n\n","physicalDescription":"Two interlocking chairs made with a steamed beech frame upholstered in PVC.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bacon, Clive","id":"A39400"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x40048"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Design Furnishing Contracts","id":"A39401"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x39721"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"beech","id":"AAT11948"},{"text":"polyvinyl chloride","id":"AAT14513"}],"techniques":[{"text":"upholstery","id":"x37978"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Steamed beech frame upholstered in PVC","categories":[{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"},{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2013GD3713","2020MP0046","2020MP0047","2020MP0048","2020MP0049","2020MP0050","2020MP0051"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES344320"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES344320"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chair","id":""}],[{"text":"Chair","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1963","earliest":"1963-01-01","latest":"1963-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Council of Industrial Design","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"74","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"89","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"48","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Historical significance: Winner of the Council of Industrial Design's Design Centre Award in 1963.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Linking/stacking chairs, pair, designed by Clive Bacon and manufactured by Design Furnishing Contracts, 1963","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"chairs","id":"AAT37772"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.135-1965","CIRC.135A-1965"],"accessionNumberNum":"135","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1965,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Chair [1]","Chair [2]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":false}}
