An upright veneered wooden cabinet, slightly tapering towards the top on the sides. The top of sides are rounded. Most of the cabinet is veneered with dark brown wood, except for front which has a large cutaway section inset from and parallel to the outside edge of the cabinet. The bottom half of this section contains an inlaid yellow, speckled burrwood veneer at the top of which, in the centre, is a black plastic rectangular insertion, with a semi-circular aperture over a white plastic tuning scale. The cale has black markings. Below this is a round, fluted plastic control knob. Just below this is another control knob, with knobs in line either side of it. All of the knobs are identical in pattern. The top part of the cutaway section contains a loudspeaker aperture within a shallow recess, covered with a pale brown fabric. The edge of the cutaway is painted red. Across this cutaway and overlapping it are three narrow, yellow horizontal struts. The sides of the cabinet are undercut to the depth of the burrwood veneer at the base. The back of the set has four horizontal cutaways with rounded corners, covered from behind with a light brown fabric. A metal data plate is attached at the bottom-centre.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Russell, R.D.","id":"A18319"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Murphy Radio Ltd.","id":"A20816"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plywood","id":"AAT12849"},{"text":"textile","id":"x41581"},{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"},{"text":"walnut","id":"AAT12476"},{"text":"maple","id":"AAT12242"}],"techniques":[{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Plywood veneered with walnut and birdseye maple, plastics, textile","categories":[{"text":"Audio equipment","id":"THES49027"},{"text":"Electrical appliances","id":"THES49024"},{"text":"Product design","id":"THES49025"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[{"text":"modernist","id":"AAT21474"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES341511"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Radio","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Welwyn Garden City","id":"x38939"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1934","earliest":"1934-01-01","latest":"1934-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"28","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements taken from paper catalogue - not checked on object.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased by the Circulation Department from 8th Sanderstead (St. Mary's) Scouts [1976/372].\r\n","historicalContext":"Brand new, in 1934, this set would have cost £14 10s 0d.\r\n","briefDescription":"Radio, Murphy model A24; veneered wooden cabinet; designed by R.D.
