At the time it was made Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann was a leading designer. Like Ruhlmann's furniture, it uses rare materials, including shagreen (sharkskin) and ebony veneer. The decorative stringing is made of ivory and even the carcase of the mirror is made of expensive mahogany. The slender legs and delicate lines are similar to Art Deco furniture from Paris, fashionable at just this moment.\r\n\r\nThe design is probably by J.F. Johnson, who was designing furniture for Heal & Sons at the time. The London firm is more usually associated with the Arts and Crafts style, and this cheval glass shows that it was keeping abreast of fashion in the 1920s.\r\n\r\nThe set of bedroom furniture, of which this forms part, was made for the author Dodie Smith.","physicalDescription":"Cheval mirror made of mahogany and veneered with ebony and shagreen, with ivory handles and stringing.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Johnson, J.F.","id":"A14942"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Heal & Son Ltd","id":"A3033"},"association":{"text":"retailers","id":"AAT25246"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"},{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"veneering","id":"AAT53878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342692"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Mirror","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1926-1927","earliest":"1926-01-01","latest":"1927-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"161.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"","note":"height is approximate"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"56","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"46.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"19/05/2025","earliest":"2025-05-19","latest":"2025-05-19"},"part":"","note":"measured at base"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Made for the author Dodie Smith","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cheval mirror probably designed by J.F.
