They were used to protect women's faces from the heat of the fire, so that they would not redden unbecomingly. Often they were set with embroidery or painting done by an individual and set into a screen by the cabinet maker but this screen has used a commercially printed panel. ","physicalDescription":"A pole screen of turned, carved and painted satinwood, on a tripod stand, the oval screen set with a panel of painted paper screen.\nThe stand is made up of three turned elements (bottom section, pole, finial), with three scrolling, tapering, square-sectioned legs tenoned into the bottom section; a framed oval screen is attached to the pole by a brass loop screwed to its back; the screen comprises a painting on paper applied to a board and then framed but not glazed. The painting depicts a small medallion of a woman and putti in <i>grisaille</i> (painted in tones of grey to imitate carved stone) surrounded by a border of grapes and vine leaves in colour. The legs, base and finial also have painted decoration of pendant husks, bows, bay leaves, white berries, pink roses and palm leaves.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"satinwood","id":"AAT12451"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Turned, carved and painted satinwood with paper screen and brass loop","categories":[{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[{"text":"Neo-classicism","id":"x38958"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2017KN0979","2017KN0980"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343303"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pole screen","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1780-90","earliest":"1780-01-01","latest":"1790-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"145.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"44.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"44.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of painted screen","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of painted screen","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"On show in the Octagon Court (Gallery 40) in January 1936, as shown in negative 74057, view no. 1c.\n\nPreviously on loan to Museum of Costume and Textiles, Nottingham, ca.1980 - 2009.\r\nSee also Registered Papers 67/3245.","historicalContext":"In an era when heating was almost entirely by open fires, it was important for women to protect their faces from the heat, which could make them redden or, if they were wearing makeup, could cause that to run.
