The adjustable screens allowed women to sit close to the fire for warmth, while protecting their faces from the heat of the fire. Small screens were also sometimes incorporated into tables for needlework.","physicalDescription":"A pole screen in mahogany, with tripod base, the arched panel set with tent-stitch embroidery showing figures in a landscape, with a woman spinning, men playing musical instruments and a pair of young lovers. The base of the shaft is vase-shaped and spirally carved, the tripod being carved with acanthus and ending in very elongated ball and claw feet. The tripod section is covered in a very dark, thick varnish, so that it appears almost ebonized. The panel is backed with green, plain-weave silk, both this and the embroidery protected with a plastic film.\n\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mahogany","id":"AAT12221"}],"techniques":[{"text":"turning","id":"AAT53158"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Turned and carved mahogany, embroidery","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2011FD8341","2017JV8051"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES341877"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Pole screen","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1750-1780","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Lt.
