Although it was acquired by the Museum in 1882 as a French 17th century lute, this example was probably made in the 19th century. It may at one time have been used either as an artist's prop or as a semi-folk version of the lute, which was being played in Germany well into the 19th century.","physicalDescription":"Lute with a body made up of ten (maple) ribs, bordered with small alternating pieces or <i>tesserae</i> of ebony and ivory. The soundboard is of pine and has the same ebony and ivory bordering as on the rose. It is fitted with a bridge on the soundboard and eleven brass hitch-pins and an ivory strap-button at the bottom of the instument. The neck has an ebony fingerboard fitted with brass frets and two pegheads curving backwards, one for six courses (one single- and five double-stringed) and one for five single bass strings or diapasons.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28690"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ebony","id":"AAT12055"},{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"maple","id":"AAT12236"}],"techniques":[{"text":"planing","id":"AAT53863"},{"text":"joining","id":"AAT137062"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Planed and joined maple ribs; stained wooden (maple?) neck with planed ebony fingerboard with brass frets; ebony and ivory bordering on the edge of the soundboard and rose; turned ivory strap-pin.","categories":[{"text":"Musical instruments","id":"THES48919"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2010ED5670","2017JR9356","2010ED6392","2010ED6391","2010ED6390","2010ED6389","2010ED6388","2010ED6387","2010ED5682","2010ED5681","2010ED5680","2010ED5679","2010ED5678","2010ED5677","2010ED5676","2010ED5675","2010ED5674","2010ED5673","2010ED5672","2010ED5671","2018KV8773"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES299338"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Lute","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800 - 1880","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1880-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"32","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements taken from the original Registered Descriptions.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This instrument formed part of the collections of Carl Engel and was bought by the museum for £4 - 10 - 0.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lute, with ebony and ivory bordering, French or German, 1820 - 1860.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"The registered description of 1882 describes this instrument as \"French, 17th century\" with a \"double neck (altered in the 18th century)\".
