Once assembled, turbans were left intact, to be placed on or removed from the head in a single piece.  Similar to modern-day hat racks, turban stands such as this carved and gilded wood example would have been mounted on a wall and were used to prevent the headgear from becoming undone. ","physicalDescription":"The long back panel is carved with a central vase from which floral sprays and palmettes emerge, flanked by two columns and topped with a floral bouquet tied together with a ribbon.  The shelf is supported by a cusped bracket. The entire stand is gilded.
