At Yeoman's Row, his main living room was very high, with a dominant studio window, but it was not very large. This cupboard formed part of a peninsula unit, with bookshelves. Yeoman's Row runs south from Brompton Road to Walton Street, just to the east of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The flat was designed with much built-in furniture, including this cupboard, which formed part of a peninsular unit, ending in bookshelves.\r\n\r\nIt was shown in a photograph of the flat published in the Architectural Review vol. LXXXII, July 1937, pp. 53-58 (photo p. 54). At that time the architect had lived in the flat for about eighteen months. \r\n\r\nHe commented on his very yacht-like planning of the flat on p. 55: 'The particular principle of \"planning in section\" used in this design, can be explained best by these plans and section. You cannot get two complete floor levels, with proper headroom, in a total floor to ceiling height of 12 ft. Your programme demands that the largest possible space of full ceiling height is available for \"living\" in.\n\nWells Coates continued to use the flat as his London base until 1955, when he returned to his native Canada. The cupboard was retained by his daughter, Mrs Laura Cohn, who sold it to the Museum in 1977 (Registered File: 75/2224), together with a wardrobe (W.15-1977) and a bed ladder (W.13-1977), which was a donation. \n\nAn exhibition of the work of Wells Coates was held at the Heinz Gallery, RIBA, in December 1976.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drinks cupboard with three shelves for glasses and jugs, English, 1935, designed by Wells Coates for his own flat","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Coates, Wells, 'Planning in Section', in 'Architect's Note', Architectural Review, vol LXXXII, July 1937, pp. 53-58"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["W.14-1977"],"accessionNumberNum":"14","accessionNumberPrefix":"W","accessionYear":1977,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-01-01","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
