WAISTCOAT\r\nFrame-knitted cotton lined with woven cotton twill.\r\nEnglish, about 1780\r\n\r\nThe front of the waistcoat is cut from fabric knitted in stocking stitch with decorative openwork borders. The back is made from the same fabric as the lining. The waistcoat fastens with Dorset thread buttons.\r\nThe use of the knitting or stocking frame (invented by William Lee as early as 1589) was well established in Europe by the eighteenth century. Although it was used mainly for the production of stockings, lengths of fabric were also knitted to be made up into such garments as waistcoats and breeches.\r\n\r\nPurchased for the Museum by the Hon.
