It may have had a direct connection with one of the Rational dress groups, such as the Rational Dress Society which was founded in Britain in 1881. In 1889 The Rational Dress Society’s Gazette was announcing a new depot in London offering Rational corsets among other items. Such reformers – at least those who had not rejected stays entirely – would have approved of the simplicity and gently supportive structure of this corset, which recalls earlier examples worn around the start of Queen Victoria's reign. \r\n\r\nThe image accompanying the text on the internal stamp, a depiction of a woman with a baby, reflects some reformers' concerns about mainstream corsetry threatening healthy maternity. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Corset of white cotton with quilting.
