No.2), referring to a similar jacket from Greece, says: \"The shape of the jacket is Turkish... (it) is worn by all Balkan peoples as well as in North Africa. The shape is obtained by shortening the Turkish surcoat ('djubbeh') from below to over the hip. This short jacket is not an ancient Turkish garment. It must have been introduced in recent times, for it is not found in costume pictures before the end of the 17th century. The jacket reproduced here has the sleeves attatched which are pointed in the Persian-Kurd manner. But the modern Greeks prefer to wear them open down over the whole front, and only button them over the lower-arm and wrist, thus leaving the white shirt sleeves exposed to view.\" and again (p.3. No.5) \"The loose hanging sleeves attatched to the long upper garments have long been characteristic of Persian and Turkish costume, and thus they have also been retained as an integral part of the upper garments of the modern Turkish short costume.\"\r\n\r\nAccording to previous documentation that accompanied the object, the open-sleeved jacket was worn very widely in Greece, and illuystrations of this can be found in Benaki Museum, Hellenic National Costumes and Tarsouli. Yannina Was an important centrein the ninteenth century for the Turkish-type gold embroidery on costume, which was popular all over Greece and the Balkans, and sent gold embroderies as far afield as Boasnia. Similar work was also done by bands of tailors and embroiderers who travelled the country taking orders (Zora, p.13)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Jacket, embroidered, Greece (Corfu), about 1800 - 1877.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[{"text":"caspar clarke","id":"A21105"}],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["453-1877"],"accessionNumberNum":"453","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1877,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
