He went to Egypt to join his brother as an assistant in 1870 when his brother had a school of Egyptology in Cairo. He then became assistant to Auguste Mariette.  (Mariette was the first Conservator of Egyptian Monuments. He created the Egyptian Antiquities Service and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. He was succeeded by Gaston Maspero.) In 1881 Brugsch became assistant curator in the Bulaq and Cairo Museums under Maspero.  He then became Keeper in 1883 and remained in this post until he retired 1 Jan 1914 (43 years). He was a lithographer and a photographer and made plates for the Catalogue Gen. of the Cairo Museum. He was the first European to enter the tomb of the Royal Mummies at Deir el-Bahri in 1881. He was made Bey and Pasha by the Khedive of Egypt. In 1887 he published 'Le livre des rois, contenant la liste chronologique des rois, reines, princes, princesses et personnages importants de l'Egypte depuis Menes jusqu'a Nectanebo II'- a principle text for many years. He retired to Nice and died 1930.
