Building upon her training as a painter, she remained committed to producing two-dimensional works and surface decoration. Together with her friend Evelyn Wyld, she visited the Atlas region in Morocco to learn weaving and dyeing wool with natural colours. Then, in 1909, Wyld returned from the UK with additional training, looms, wool and a teacher from the National School of Weavers to help set up a workshop in rue Visconti. Led by Wyld, it produced rugs designed by Gray. The yellow hand-knotted rug in the V&A collection is typical of Gray’s 1920s production. Abstract and geometric, her designs were often inspired by collage work and, here, it seems likely Gray was playing with cut-out paper shapes. The incomplete lettering in the lower shape might even suggest the use of magazines.","physicalDescription":"A large hand-knotted rug, of yellow background with abstract design featuring four different shapes in cream, faun, brown and black.
