It would seem that the underdresses of Nisyros and Telos are very much alike - see Tarsouli Pls. 56, 59, Gerola, I costumi muliebri, p.207, for Telos. Both have wide sleeves smocked at the shoulder and ornamented with vertical stripes of embroidery, and a solid band of pattern, in clock shapes which have been described as birds, round the hem.\r\n\r\nDresses illustrated as belonging to Nisyros (BFAC Catalogue Nos. 44, 66 and 83 from the Bent collection, Montesanto p.108; Tarsouli Pl.56; Benaki Museum, Hellenic National Costume, Pl.81; Benaki booklet, P1.22) all have sleeve ornament which, according to the BFAC catalogue, was called 'little fishes'. None of the three dresses under review have just that ornament on the sleeves, and in fact they accord better with Tarsouli P1.59 in colouring as well as pattern, including the tassells on the sleeves. They are also very close to the dress from Telos illustrated by Gerola (p.207). All three evidently come from the same island, and it is possible that htey should be attributed to Telos rather than Nisyros.'","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dress, linen embroidered with coloured silks, Greece (Dodecanese, Nisyros), 1700s or 1800s.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.715-1919"],"accessionNumberNum":"715","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1919,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-31","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-24","availableToBook":true}}
